It’s almost that time again. On Sunday, August 31, the Dutch GP in Zandvoort is scheduled. In anticipation, we’ve delved into the archives. In other words, a look back at different times in Zandvoort.
The Dutch Grand Prix Formula 1 has a long tradition that was put on hold in 1985 and, to the delight of many fans of the (now revamped) dune circuit, resumed in 2021. In the 75-year history of Formula 1, Zandvoort holds a prominent place. Champions such as Graham Hill, Niki Lauda, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost, James Hunt, and even Max Verstappen have checked off this classic race. Jim Clark even did so four times, including in 1965, the year this start photo was taken.
At the start, the Scotsman was still behind Graham Hill in the BRM (left) and Richie Ginther in the Honda (right), but in the Lotus-Climax, he eventually cruised relatively easily to his third consecutive victory in the dunes. Jim Clark finished with an eight-second lead over second-place Jackie Stewart and thirteen seconds over third-place Dan Gurney. That was sixty years ago. Different times and in black and white, but oh so beautiful.
