In 2026, Felipe Drugovich will make the transition to Formula E. The Brazilian driver, 2022 Formula 2 champion, has been confirmed by Andretti as the latest addition to the electric championship. This puts a temporary end to his pursuit of a Formula 1 seat – a goal he has long pursued as a test and reserve driver for Aston Martin.

Drugovich, who impressed with his consistent performances in Formula 2, was long in the picture for a permanent spot in Formula 1. He worked as a reserve driver for Aston Martin, among other things, and drove in an F1 car during official sessions on several occasions. However, the breakthrough did not come. He now chooses a new challenge with Andretti’s Formula E team.

Drugovich himself is excited about his new adventure with the American team: “I am incredibly happy to announce that I will be joining Andretti Formula E, and I am very much looking forward to what is to come. My team and I have been in contact with Andretti since I won the Formula 2 championship, so it’s great that we have stayed in touch all this time and now finally have the opportunity to work together. It’s been far too long since I’ve raced, so I’m extremely motivated to get back on the track.”

Tsunoda and Aston Martin

Drugovich’s decision to pursue a different path opens the door for other drivers eyeing a role as a reserve driver in Formula 1. One name that is now being mentioned more prominently is Yuki Tsunoda. With Drugovich’s departure from the premier class, the path seems clear for Tsunoda to potentially take on the role of reserve driver at Aston Martin. The Japanese driver is on shaky ground at Red Bull after a disappointing first season with the team. A potential move to Aston Martin for Tsunoda is also influenced by his close ties with Honda: the Japanese engine manufacturer will join Aston Martin as a factory partner in 2026 and has seen Tsunoda as a valuable ambassador for the brand for years.
