On the same day that his son Max Verstappen won the chaotic Qatar Grand Prix, Jos Verstappen also claimed victory at the Spa Rally. Alongside co-driver Renaud Jamoul, Verstappen senior proved too strong for the competition on the decisive Sunday. “I am extremely happy with this victory,” said Jos Verstappen.
On Saturday, Verstappen had already finished the day in second place in the standings with a strong performance in his Skoda Fabia RS Rally 2 car, 7.2 seconds behind competitor Cédric Cherain. On Sunday, with five stages in the Belgian Ardennes ahead, Verstappen quickly took the lead in the standings. The driver then held onto this lead. This is Verstappen senior’s third victory in the Belgian Rally Championship (BRC).
Even Better Next Year
“I am extremely happy with this victory. We have a deserving champion this season,” Jos Verstappen told Verstappen.com. The Spa Rally was the final round of the BRC. Cédric Cherain and his co-driver Damien Withers were crowned champions, and Verstappen hopes to dethrone the pair next year.
“I am glad that we made constant progress throughout the year. We had some bad luck in the championship: in Wallonia we had two flat tires and at the Sezoensrally I made a small mistake. But I am very satisfied and will return to the BRC next year to try again,” said Verstappen. “I want to thank Renaud, who is so professional and we have a really good connection. We have a good team and that is important.”
