Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is cautiously optimistic about a potential return of the German Grand Prix. Our neighbors to the east have been missing from the calendar for quite some time, while iconic circuits like Hockenheim are eager to welcome Formula 1 back. According to Domenicali, there is optimism surrounding a German GP, but he emphasizes the importance of the right bid.

Before Germany disappeared from the calendar, a Grand Prix was scheduled almost every year; since 1950, the country had missed only four editions. Formula 1 raced at both the Hockenheim circuit and the legendary Nürburgring. Despite Germany producing great champions like Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg in recent decades, interest in the sport seemed to wane gradually. Declining viewership and financial troubles at both circuits ultimately led to the event’s demise. The last official German Grand Prix took place in 2019, although Formula 1 made a brief return to the Nürburgring during the 2020 COVID season.

Optimism

Since then, the call for a return of the German Grand Prix has grown louder. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is taking that demand seriously, as he recently stated to Motorsport Magazin. “We are open to it and ready to have the necessary discussions,” he said. “There is optimism surrounding the German GP, and I hope this develops further in the coming months. Of course, we are interested in returning to Germany, but only with the right organizer and the right offer.”

Hockenheim: The Front-Runner for a New German Grand Prix

Hockenheim is emerging as the top contender for a new German Grand Prix! The circuit has recently undergone significant renovations, especially in terms of infrastructure. But wait—Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has a message: no need to rush into decisions!

“The good news is that we’re not desperate,” Domenicali declared. “We’re receiving numerous requests from all over the globe.” He added, “If the German market doesn’t see a return to Formula 1 as a priority, we must accept that and look ahead.”

In the meantime, the Portuguese Grand Prix has already received the green light, while South Africa and Thailand are making strong pushes for their spots on the calendar. The race for races is heating up!
