Daniel Ricciardo’s future in Formula 1 is uncertain, with signs pointing to his replacement by Liam Lawson ahead of the GP in Austin. The Australian star sensed the impending change during the Singapore Grand Prix and was visibly emotional during media interviews. Former Formula 1 driver Giedo van der Garde recognizes Ricciardo’s significant influence in the sport and suggests a new role in front of the camera for him.

Renowned commentator Martin Brundle referred to Visa RB’s handling of Daniel Ricciardo’s situation as a ‘half-hearted’ farewell. After the Singapore Grand Prix, the 35-year-old driver was moved to tears, but it remained unclear whether he had indeed driven his last Grand Prix. Former driver Giedo van der Garde believes that Ricciardo may soon retire from racing, but also sees plenty of other career opportunities for the affable Australian.

“I don’t think it’s entirely fair when you consider what he (Daniel Ricciardo) has meant for the Red Bull family,” said Van der Garde on an episode of the DRS podcast. “It would be a shame if he drove his last race in this way. If they at Red Bull truly respect him, they will let him race a few more times. Just wait until the end of the year and then give him a dignified farewell.”

Time to Make Television

Van der Garde, however, also understands that there are likely contractual obligations that require Ricciardo to pack his bags. “There must be something in Liam Lawson’s contract that entitles him to that seat,” explained the former Caterham driver. “This way, he can prepare well for next year.”

If Daniel Ricciardo actually says goodbye to Formula 1, what can he expect from the future? “Of course, he can go endurance racing or something similar,” said Van der Garde. “But actually, it’s time for him to start making television. He has such a distinct personality and also does the marketing side very well. I’m sure he will get an offer.”
