David Coulthard, a former racing driver, has always been aware of his role model status, he says. However, this did not prevent him from showing emotions, such as giving the middle finger.
“I have also given the middle finger when I was a driver,” Coulthard admits. “I would then apologize for it. Swearing; I’ve done that too. Even kings or queens swear sometimes, I’m convinced of that. The point is whether you know you’re a role model and how you behave afterwards.”
Coulthard praises someone like Max Verstappen. “He always does that fantastically. Max is therefore a role model. Not only because of his achievements. I think he is an idol not only in the Netherlands, but also internationally. He is very pleasant as a person, and as a driver as well. He knows his responsibilities and is aware of them.”
This is important, says the former driver for Red Bull, McLaren, and Williams. “It doesn’t mean you have to be perfect or flawless as a human being.“
