Red Bull team boss, Christian Horner, has revealed that ‘multiple teams’ were interested in Aston Martin’s latest acquisition, Andy Cowell. The former engine boss of Mercedes was contracted by the Silverstone team in early July. Cowell was a key figure during the heyday of the silver arrows, a fact well known to Horner, who would have liked to secure the British engineer for his own team.
“Andy Cowell is a fantastic guy,” says Horner ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. “He is a very strong engineer and he did an amazing job with the engine program at Mercedes. He was truly the backbone of that project.” However, in 2020, Cowell chose not to renew his contract in Brackley. The Brit was ready for a few years outside of Formula 1.
Andy Cowell’s Departure from Mercedes and New Role at Aston Martin
Andy Cowell chose to leave Mercedes and spend some time outside the sport, according to Christian Horner. “I believe every engine manufacturer spoke with him during that period,” Horner reveals. Red Bull was among those in conversation with Cowell, but the Austrian team has since revised its plans. “We are satisfied with our current composition,” explains Horner. The 50-year-old team boss accepts that Cowell will take on a leading role in Silverstone. “His role at Aston Martin is not engine-related,” concludes Horner.
Aston Martin Welcomes Cowell’s Expertise
Aston Martin team boss, Mike Krack, is pleased to rely on Cowell’s expertise. “He has always been successful,” says Krack about his new CEO. “I have only heard positive stories about him. That’s why I’m convinced this will be a positive collaboration.”
