Charles Leclerc will not be joined by Adrian Newey next year. The master designer, often linked with a move to Maranello, ultimately chose to collaborate with Aston Martin. Leclerc is ‘not disappointed’ that Newey is heading to the competition; at Ferrari, they reportedly value the collective over the individual.
Adrian Newey has reportedly ‘always wanted to work with Ferrari’, but last Tuesday he chose a new challenge with Aston Martin. Early next year, he will join Lawrence Stroll’s team, hoping to win new championships in the future. Sky Sports asked Leclerc in the run-up to the Azerbaijan GP if Newey’s transfer is a “missed opportunity” for Ferrari.
Not Disappointed
“Let me start by saying that I am not disappointed,” the Monegasque responded. “I would be disappointed if we hadn’t tried or hadn’t spoken to Adrian. As a team, we certainly approached him. But in the end, he chose Aston Martin, and I fully respect that.” Leclerc doubts whether the presence of Adrian Newey is decisive for future success. “At Ferrari, we have always valued the group more than one individual,” he stated.
Adrian Newey’s Achievements
“Of course, Adrian Newey is Adrian Newey, and it’s incredible what he has achieved,” he added. “But we have incredible people working at Ferrari and I am sure we have the right collective to return to the top. I wish Newey all the best, but of course, I hope that Ferrari comes out as the winner.”
