There is no shortage of memorable moments in 75 years of F1. Some with a tear, others with a laugh, but all forever etched in our collective memory. In this series, Dutch motorsport insiders share their favorite memories from the rich history of Formula 1. PART 4: Nicky Catsburg.
When asked about his favorite moment from 75 years of F1, Nicky Catsburg thinks back to the past, to friends, and the climax of a championship battle. “I can choose from two moments,” says the driver who earns his living racing in the IMSA in the United States.
“I think of the championship decision in the final race of 2008, in Brazil. It was between Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton. We watched it on TV, with a group of friends. That race had everything. It was bizarre, it was about the title, and all sorts of things happened in the last lap. Hamilton became champion because he overtook Timo Glock at the end. And on TV you saw Massa’s family, who, like him and many others, were convinced that he had won the title. A bizarre race, I’ve never forgotten it.”
But Catsburg also wants to mention Verstappen. “Namely, Max Verstappen‘s very first victory, in 2016. I was watching live, it was already a special day because it was his first race after being promoted to the big Red Bull Racing. The way he managed to keep Kimi Räikkönen behind him in Barcelona, plus Olav Mol’s commentary… Absolutely a beautiful memory as well.”
