Carlos Sainz is gearing up for a challenging weekend in Qatar. After a strong third-place finish in Las Vegas, the Spaniard anticipates that the Losail International Circuit will not suit his Ferrari as well. According to Sainz, the team’s expectations are that it will be extremely difficult. With McLaren and Mercedes in top form, he does not see himself vying for the podium.

Final Chapter with Ferrari

Sainz is in the midst of his final races with Ferrari. The Spaniard will be moving to Williams next season, but he wants to conclude his tenure with the Italian team in style. This is not just for his own reputation, but also because of the battle in the constructors’ championship. McLaren currently leads that battle with 608 points, but Ferrari is close behind with 584 points.

Sainz’s third-place finish in Las Vegas, with teammate Charles Leclerc in P4, helped Ferrari to slightly reduce the gap, but less than hoped. However, Sainz felt that there was no more to be gained. “Given the pace we had, we got the maximum out of it. We can be proud of that,” concludes the Spaniard.

Realistic Expectations

The expectations for Qatar are much lower. According to Sainz, the character of the circuit does not suit the Ferrari. “The maximum we can achieve there is a fifth or sixth place,” he states. “McLaren and Mercedes will be very strong, and probably Red Bull too. We have to be realistic.”

Despite the difficulties, Ferrari has had moments of dominance this season, such as the victories in Austin and Mexico. But on a circuit like Losail, Sainz expects a tough battle. “In Las Vegas, we scored important points. That was crucial, because Qatar will be tough.”
