The new Cadillac Formula 1 team has provided more clarity about its future driver duo. Several well-known former drivers have already been linked to the American racing team, but so far, the team management has not committed to anyone. As rumors swirl in the paddock, team boss Graeme Lowdon confirmed that they are in talks with multiple candidates – though the focus is primarily on building the car for now.
“We have the advantage of already knowing many of the drivers,” Lowdon told Sky Sports. “This includes both the younger drivers who have come up through Formula 2 and the established names with a lot of F1 experience. We are constantly in conversation with these individuals and also try to spend time in the paddock. But if we arrive in Melbourne without a car, no one will be grateful,” he joked. “That being said, we are indeed in talks with a number of drivers.”
Multiple British media outlets report that Mercedes reserve and ten-time Grand Prix winner Valtteri Bottas is the favorite for a seat at Cadillac. The Finn is currently a supporting force at Mercedes, but has also become known for his humorous videos on social media. He recently posted a video of himself in a Cadillac. “Not yet,” he said with a wink. “I saw that video too – it shows that he bought a Cadillac,” Lowdon grinned. “In terms of driver selection, there is truly a mix of skills available. We are taking our time to find the right duo.”
Cadillac Keeps Its Cards Close to Its Chest
In addition to Bottas, Sergio Pérez, Mick Schumacher, and Felipe Drugovich are also reportedly on the American team’s radar. Pérez brings experience and established sponsors, while Schumacher and Drugovich are considered young talents within the paddock. Cadillac seems to have temporarily abandoned its earlier intention to select an American driver. Lowdon emphasized that the team benefits from not being stuck in the familiar rhythm of the other teams. “We still have some time, and we can use it to make the right decision,” he stated. “We hope that the fans will be excited about our line-up – and about the fact that there is a new team on the grid they can follow. Don’t expect any news at Silverstone, but keep an eye on us,” he concluded mysteriously.
It’s possible that Cadillac is waiting for other developments in the driver market. For instance, top driver George Russell has not yet signed a new contract with Mercedes. Reportedly, this is due to the German racing team’s interest in Red Bull champion Max Verstappen. Last weekend in Austria, rumors of a possible transfer of the Dutchman flared up again. If Verstappen were to move to the Silberpfeile, Cadillac would undoubtedly try to secure Russell.
