Former F1 driver Martin Brundle has weighed in on the driver swap between Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda. The New Zealander was informed on Thursday that he is being demoted to the sister team, Racing Bulls, while Tsunoda is making the reverse move to Red Bull. Brundle does have some advice for the demoted Lawson.
After two Grand Prix weekends, Liam Lawson’s Red Bull adventure is already over. The New Zealander underperformed during the races in Melbourne and Shanghai, and is therefore being replaced by Yuki Tsunoda from the GP Japan onwards. Red Bull’s decision has stirred up a lot of dust, and former driver Martin Brundle also doesn’t understand the chaos within the racing stable.
“Red Bull is the only top team with a junior team on the grid. It’s confusing why they keep getting into trouble with their drivers,” the analyst responds via X. “And the only driver they so desperately need is looking around for his own future.” With this, Brundle seems to be alluding to the ongoing rumors that Max Verstappen is considering a move to another team.
‘Nothing to lose’
Team boss Christian Horner previously explained that it is Red Bull’s ‘duty of care’ to protect Lawson. That’s why the New Zealander is being demoted to Racing Bulls. Brundle now encourages the driver to seize this opportunity to develop his ‘natural talent’. “Liam Lawson’s reputation is temporarily ruined so he has nothing to lose at this moment,” Brundle continues. “He should take advantage of that.”
