F1: The Movie returns for a second instalment, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told the BBC. Rumours had been circulating for some time about a sequel, but it has now been confirmed. Whether Brad Pitt will reprise the lead is still unclear, though he will be involved in the casting decisions.

At the annual Academy Awards lunch in Los Angeles, Bruckheimer said a sequel is in the works. Exactly what the story will be and when the film might be released have not yet been confirmed.

Joseph Kosinski, the film’s director, already said in November 2025 that he was interested in a possible follow-up, he told Variety. “We’re in a phase where we’re considering what the next chapter for Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt’s character, ed.) and for APXGP (the Formula 1 team Hayes races for, ed.) could be,” Kosinski said. Given the response to the film, the director and Bruckheimer have decided to bring it back. “Because we had so much fun, here we are,” Kosinski concluded.

‘Long Road’

The film, which was released last June, took in over $630 million worldwide and was shot during Formula 1 race weekends. It was produced across the 2023 and 2024 F1 seasons, which means a number of drivers appear in the film. One driver was more involved than the others: seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton served as a co-producer. At the upcoming Oscars the film has four nominations. “It was a long road to make the film, because we had to endure a few strikes. Ultimately the film entertained audiences worldwide,” Bruckheimer says.

Alongside that, Bruckheimer revealed he also has plans for a new Days of Thunder — the 1990s NASCAR film that starred Tom Cruise. “We have a lot in the pipeline. We’re waiting until there is a great script,” Bruckheimer closed.

F1: The Movie

Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a once-promising Formula 1 driver who was chiefly celebrated in the 1990s, suffered an accident that nearly ended his career. Thirty years later he is approached by a former teammate — now the owner of an F1 team on the brink of collapse. Hayes is persuaded to return to Formula 1 to keep the team from going under.
