It had been known for some time, but on Tuesday, Cadillac’s new Formula 1 team confirmed that it has signed Valtteri Bottas. The 35-year-old Finn will race alongside Sergio Pérez for the American racing stable from next year. According to Bottas, the collaboration with Cadillac offers a unique opportunity to build something new within the premier class. Moreover, he recognizes the same professionalism and hunger in the team as in the absolute top teams.

“From the moment I started talking to Cadillac, I felt something special – something ambitious, yet realistic,” Bottas explained. “This is not just a racing project; it’s a long-term vision.” The American outfit will make its Formula 1 debut in 2026, but hopes to grow into a leading team within the sport in the future. In the early years, it will still rely on Ferrari engines, but from 2028 it will also come up with its own power source.

A Unique Opportunity

“It’s not every day that you get the chance to be part of something that is being built from the ground up,” said Bottas. “Now I can truly help shape this project into something that belongs on the Formula 1 grid. I’ve had the honor of working with some of the best teams in the world and I see the same professionalism and hunger here.” Bottas began his Formula 1 career with Williams, then drove for Mercedes and Sauber. At Mercedes, he played second fiddle to Lewis Hamilton, but he won ten Grand Prix and finished second in the world championship twice. This season, he accepted a reserve role with the Silberpfeile.

“Cadillac is an iconic brand with a rich history in American motorsport,” Bottas continued enthusiastically. “Being part of their story as they enter the world stage of Formula 1 is incredibly special. I look forward to representing the American racing spirit on the best circuits in the world.” Finally, he addressed his current employer: “I also want to thank Mercedes for their unwavering support and sportsmanship in making such an exciting step possible.” Team boss Toto Wolff had already emphasized that he is grateful to Bottas for his work as a test and reserve driver, but that the Finn truly deserves a permanent racing seat.
