In 2025, Gabriel Bortoleto will embark on his first season in Formula 1. The Brazilian driver, who races for Sauber, would not have made it to the premier class without the assistance of Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso. Bortoleto reveals how the two-time world champion helped him at a crucial point in his career.
In 2025, Gabriel Bortoleto will be one of six rookies on the grid. However, the Brazilian driver almost didn’t realize this dream. The Formula 2 champion had already made a significant impression in the feeder series, but it was Fernando Alonso’s assistance that ultimately brought the Brazilian to Formula 1.
Bortoleto reflects on the moment Alonso helped him secure a Formula 3 seat in an interview with Formula1.com. “We didn’t realize then how difficult it was to get a F3 seat,” the young driver explains. “It was still July, and we thought we had plenty of time. But then I heard that PREMA was already full, and Trident had almost no space left.”
Alonso’s Influence
Fortunately for the young Brazilian, his father met Alonso during a trip to the Red Bull Ring. “Fernando knew who I was because I had driven for his team in the FRECA (Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine),” he recalls. “We both wanted to collaborate at that time. They called Trident on my behalf and everything fell into place. We drafted a contract and eventually won the championship.”
The two-time world champion has since become a mentor for Bortoleto, something the Brazilian is deeply grateful for. “We have a good relationship, even though it’s primarily professional. When we talk, it’s always about racing. He has always supported me in Formula 3 and Formula 2. It’s amazing to have him by my side.”
