According to former Formula 1 driver Nelson Piquet Junior, Gabriel Bortoleto is firmly on Ferrari’s radar. The Brazilian, currently racing for Sauber, is, in his view, a serious candidate should Lewis Hamilton unexpectedly leave the Italian team.
“I think Ferrari is the logical next step for Bortoleto,” Piquet Junior suggests on the Pelas Pistas Podcast. “Perhaps this is due to his connection with Ferrari engines this year at Sauber. Ferrari, of course, has access to all the data, they see more than we can. They have a certain link with Sauber, and given the results Bortoleto is showing this season, it’s clear he’s on their radar.”
Piquet Junior doesn’t rule out the possibility that Ferrari is already considering concrete steps, should there be any changes in the current driver lineup. “If anything happens to Hamilton for whatever reason, I think Ferrari would immediately knock on Sauber’s door – the future Audi – and ask: ‘When can we have this guy?'”
