Mohammed Ben Sulayem has made a strong start to his campaign for a second term as FIA president. The Emirati announced his candidacy last Monday. Already, the president has secured the support of 36 different FIA motorsport federations. In a letter of support, the FIA clubs express their backing for Ben Sulayem in his bid for another four years as president. The letter is a setback for Carlos Sainz senior, who had previously indicated his intention to run for the position.

The first four years of Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s presidency of the FIA have not been without controversy. Several FIA heavyweights left the governing body, and the Emirati also implemented changes to the statutes that reduced his accountability. Additionally, stricter rules were introduced for the use of profanity by the drivers. Despite these challenges, Ben Sulayem can count on ample support for a second term as president.

“Dear President Mohammed. On behalf of the affiliated clubs listed below, we write to express our sincere gratitude for your service, commitment, vision, and above all, the execution of your manifesto that you promised us, the members,” reads the letter approved by 36 FIA clubs. “Without the decisive and courageous actions you took from day one, the future of the FIA would have been in jeopardy. The turnaround achieved in less than four years is nothing short of extraordinary.”

The various presidents of the 36 FIA clubs appreciate the ‘inclusive approach’, where Ben Sulayem ‘supports’ and ‘treats with respect’ the presidents. “We also recognize and commend the significant efforts you and your team have made to reposition the FIA as a global leader in both mobility and motorsport,” the letter continues. “The strength and reputation of the FIA brand have clearly grown as a result of your leadership. That being said, we understand that four years is a short time to complete the ambitious reforms you have initiated.”

Carlos Sainz Senior

Therefore, the motorsport federations support the Emirati’s decision to run for a second term. “We strongly encourage you to stand for re-election, so you can continue the important work you have started. With our full support, with deep appreciation and optimism for the future.” The public letter of support to Ben Sulayem is a significant setback for Carlos Sainz senior. The father of Williams driver Carlos Sainz had previously expressed interest in the presidency.
