Audi Gears Up for F1 Debut with Advanced Powertrain

Audi is diligently preparing for its Formula 1 debut in 2026. Starting next year, the current Sauber team will be transformed into a factory team for the German car manufacturer. In a comprehensive complex in Neuburg, the automotive giant is developing its own powertrain. The developments are on schedule, admits chief engineer Steven Dreyer. Even before the Audi engine has completed a single lap, the engineers are already focusing on 2027 and 2028.

Audi’s new Formula 1 team has not yet completed a test round, but the development of the new hybrid V6 engine is largely finished. In an interview with The Drive, Dreyer stated that Audi is primarily focusing on further developing the powertrain for future seasons. “The development for 2026 is completed, and we are already focusing on 2027 and 2028,” he proudly shared. “The development of components never really stops in Formula 1, but given the limited amount of valuable data from the current Sauber and Ferrari setup, we are looking beyond our first year.”

Simulator Tests

Sauber currently relies on Ferrari power, the characteristics of which are strictly confidential to Audi’s technicians. However, the new technical regulations for 2026 make this data less important for the Germans. According to Dreyer, they rely on simulator tests in Neuburg to assess the development and performance of their own engine. The Audi setup will actually be put into action for the first time at the end of January and mid-February, during private tests in Barcelona and public tests in Bahrain, respectively.

The facilities in Neuburg will not be a hindrance. Although the complex has existed for some time, it has been thoroughly renovated for Formula 1 purposes. The Audi factory is on par with the technical headquarters of, for example, Ferrari and Mercedes. Dreyer confirmed that Audi has heavily invested in the facilities, but preferred not to discuss the exact amounts. Therefore, expect towering costs.
