Antonio Pérez Garibay, father of Sergio Pérez, has once again come to his son’s defense. The latter has lost an immense number of points in recent months compared to teammate Max Verstappen, and his future in Formula 1 is uncertain. However, Papa Pérez assures that the best of his son – also ‘the most famous person in the world’ – is yet to come.

In a conversation with ESPN, Pérez’s father defended his son this week against critics suggesting that he should soon leave the racing scene. Ralf Schumacher also came under fire, with Pérez Garibay making some homophobic remarks. The German ex-driver has since responded to the insults and urges Sergio Pérez to prove himself on the track.

Pérez senior further emphasized that his son made it to Formula 1 on his own merit. He also takes a swipe at the Stroll family. “I am not Lawrence Stroll; I don’t have the money to buy a Formula 1 team for my son,” said Pérez Garibay. “The fact that Checo is racing here, he owes to himself. He achieved that on his own.” The 65-year-old Mexican then points to the great popularity that Pérez enjoys, both domestically and abroad. “Checo is the most famous person in Mexico, in Latin America, and in the world,” his father declared. “He has caused a revolution.

Finally, Pérez Garibay promises that his son will ‘simply’ fulfill his contract with Red Bull. “Checo has two more years in Formula 1,” he concluded. “The best is yet to come. All I can say right now is that he is the vice-world champion. Moreover, he has helped his team win the constructors’ title twice. We’ve never experienced that in Mexico before.”

Despite his father’s praise, Sergio Pérez‘s future looks bleak. Although he signed a new contract with Red Bull in June, the team management is openly discussing potential replacements. It’s no surprise that Pérez’s position is shaky. He paled this season next to Max Verstappen; while the Dutchman defends his driver’s title, the Mexican is only in eighth place in the championship.
