Andrea Kimi Antonelli is uncertain about when his contract extension will be finalized. The future of both the Italian rookie and his teammate George Russell at Mercedes has been a popular topic of speculation since it was revealed that Max Verstappen is in talks with the Silver Arrows. However, Antonelli reveals at Spa-Francorchamps that he is not worried about his future with the German racing team: ‘I think I am in a good position.’

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is in his first year in Formula 1. The rookie secured his first podium finish in Canada, but then retired twice during the Grands Prix of Austria and Great Britain. With the ongoing rumors about a possible move by Max Verstappen to Mercedes, questions have also been raised recently about the young rookie’s future with the Silver Arrows. This is particularly because a contract extension for Antonelli is still pending.

Does the young Italian believe he will soon receive certainty about his future at Mercedes, in the form of a contract extension? “That’s the million-dollar question,” Antonelli dodges the question during the press conference at Spa-Francorchamps. The Mercedes driver is then asked if his contract extension would indeed earn him a million dollars. “If that’s the case, I’d like to help with the negotiations,” jokes the also present Lewis Hamilton. “I know Toto quite well.”

Antonelli Sees Future at Mercedes

Although Antonelli does not seem to have clarity yet about when he can expect a contract extension, he is confident that he will stay with the Silver Arrows for the time being. “The team works really well together, and I get along very well with George,” says the young Mercedes driver. “We are doing a good job, and there is a great atmosphere within the team. Mercedes ultimately knows what is the best choice for them next year. But I think I’m in a good position.”

Earlier, Antonelli’s team boss Toto Wolff also said that the priority within Mercedes lies with their current line-up in the form of Antonelli and Russell, the Austrian revealed.
