Former Formula 1 driver Andrea de Adamich has passed away at the age of 84. The Italian raced for iconic teams such as Ferrari and McLaren and was involved in one of the most severe mass crashes in Formula 1 history.
De Adamich competed for Ferrari, McLaren, March, Surtees, and Brabham during his career. Between 1968 and 1973, he participated in 34 Grand Prix races, 12 of which were in the 1972 season. In total, he collected six World Championship points, three in 1972 and three in 1973.
Silverstone 1973
De Adamich is perhaps most remembered for his participation in the infamous 1973 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. There, one of the most severe mass crashes in Formula 1 history took place. During the first round, Jody Scheckter, who was fourth in his McLaren, spun at Woodcote Corner, causing as many as nine cars to collide. De Adamich suffered a broken knee and ankle in the accident.
Civilian Honor
A year later, de Adamich retired from racing and transitioned to television. For decades, he presented the sports program Grand Prix on Italia 1 and formed a commentary duo with Guido Schittone for Formula 1 races on Mediaset. For his contributions to sports and media, he was appointed ‘Commendatore’ of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2022, one of the highest civilian honors in Italy.
De Adamich leaves behind his wife, whom he married in a civil ceremony in January 2010.
