Reserve driver Jack Doohan found himself in direct competition with Mick Schumacher in early July. Both drivers are vying for a seat at Alpine, and were given the opportunity to complete several laps in the A522 during a special test day at Circuit Paul Ricard. According to Toto Wolff, Schumacher performed well, though Doohan confirms he has several more tests scheduled.
Alpine announced last month that it will not continue with Esteban Ocon. While Pierre Gasly has signed a new contract, Ocon will soon have to make way. Jack Doohan seemed the most logical replacement, but the team now has a ‘long list’ of candidates. WEC driver Mick Schumacher hopes to make a comeback with the French team, while team advisor Flavio Briatore has his eye on Carlos Sainz.
Jack Doohan can confirm that he will soon be back in the A522. Is he still the most likely candidate for a contract? “Before we go to Budapest, I have another two test days at Silverstone,” the Australian told Speedcafe. “After that, I will drive again at Imola and also at Spa.”
It remains to be seen who will ultimately be offered a contract. Alpine team boss Bruno Famin said during the race weekend in Great Britain that the team has ‘a long list’ of options. “Jack Doohan and Mick Schumacher are certainly in the running, but we now have more than three options,” said the Frenchman.
