Alpine recently confirmed that Franco Colapinto will remain with the team next season, but General Manager Steve Nielsen emphasizes that the Argentine was not their only option. According to Nielsen, a long list of potential drivers was considered before the choice fell on Colapinto.
Colapinto stepped in after six races to replace Jack Doohan, who had a difficult start to the season. The Argentine initially struggled alongside his experienced teammate Pierre Gasly. “New drivers always find it challenging to adapt,” Steve Nielsen told Sky Sports F1 in Brazil. “Franco drove a few races for Williams last year, but when he replaced Jack from Imola onwards, he had to adjust first. Gradually, he improved and was able to genuinely challenge Gasly, even in a car that is not as competitive as we would like.”
According to Nielsen, Alpine had a broad list of potential drivers, even outside their own talent pool. “To be honest, we considered everyone, and many other drivers have since found places elsewhere. Gradually, we came to the choice for Franco, and we are very happy with that. But everyone who was an option at any point, we seriously considered.”
Sponsorship Money Plays No Role
Although Colapinto’s sponsor Mercado Libre was visible on the car at several races, Nielsen stressed that this played no role in the decision. “Of course, you can’t ignore the financial aspect, it always plays a part. But in the end, we chose Franco because of his talent, and the fact that he also contributes financially is a nice bonus.” Alpine believes that Colapinto, with his speed, resilience, and growing confidence, is the right teammate for Gasly as the team prepares for a strong comeback in 2026.
