The FIA has announced an investigation into a steering incident involving Fernando Alonso. During the second free practice in Bahrain, the steering wheel of the Aston Martin car came loose. Fortunately, the Spanish driver was able to regain control quickly, but the FIA is still demanding clarification.

A tense moment occurred during the second free practice in Bahrain when Fernando Alonso’s steering wheel came loose. The two-time world champion struggled with the component before it completely detached from the car. Fortunately, Alonso was able to regain control quickly and did not encounter further problems. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” said former Ferrari CEO, Luca di Montezemelo.

“The steering wheel did not fit properly onto the shaft,” Alonso explained after the free practice about what exactly happened. “The mechanics replaced the parts quickly and I was able to continue.” Despite the fact that the Spaniard was able to continue driving, the FIA finds the incident concerning. The governing body is therefore initiating an investigation. The FIA is demanding a detailed report from the Aston Martin engineers about what exactly happened. “A sanction can be imposed,” reports Sky Italia. “Both if it turns out there was a technical problem, and if Alonso reset it incorrectly.”

Long Season Ahead

The incident with Alonso’s steering wheel is just the latest setback in a growing list for Aston Martin. The British team achieved several podium finishes with Alonso at the wheel in early 2023, but can now only dream of such results. “It could be a long season,” was therefore the conclusion of the 43-year-old driver.
