Pedro de la Rosa has hailed his compatriot Fernando Alonso as potentially the best driver ever, and he believes he knows what it takes to keep Alonso at Aston Martin for the long haul. “There’s only one Fernando, and he’s simply very good,” he asserts.
Alonso had been without points for a long stretch this season, but that changed during his home race in Spain. The Aston Martin driver seems to have regained his stride. De la Rosa praises Alonso’s attitude:
“I’ve never seen a driver who has been with a Formula 1 team for so long without a chance of GP victories, yet fights as if he does. His motivation and attitude are phenomenal, just like his skills.”
The former teammate of Jos Verstappen is involved with Aston Martin, so he knows what he’s talking about. Perhaps De la Rosa is not entirely objective, but he believes in better times ahead. “We need to make sure we give Fernando a good car. Then he can do anything.”
De la Rosa hopes that his countryman and teammate will continue for many more years. “Whether he wants to retire or not will depend on us (Aston Martin),” he says in the run-up to the Spanish GP. “The car needs to be good in 2026. We need to give him every reason not to stop. Because there’s only one Fernando. And he’s simply very good.”
