Fernando Alonso reveals what his decision about a possible retirement after the 2026 season depends on. The Spaniard previously stated Psych-up 2 with his 44 years being the oldest driver on the current grid, and therefore thinks more and more about his retirement. In an interview with Diaro AS, the Spaniard previously spoke candidly about an impending end to his Formula 1 career. According to the two-time world champion, the upcoming rule changes in 2026 will be the last he will experience as a driver. “That means the last chance to win a race, to get on the podium and to fight for a championship,” said an honest Alonso.
‘Aiming to Help Aston Martin Become World Champions’
However, the Spanish driver is still uncertain about when he will make his final laps in the premier class. “I’m leaving the final decision for next year,” Alonso candidly shares. The world champion technically has a contract with the British team until the end of 2026. Yet, there is no certainty that Alonso will indeed leave Aston Martin then. “It depends on how the team is doing at that time, and what they still need from me.”
“I am open to helping the team as much as possible,” Alonso continues. “It’s not about me now. I don’t need to keep racing. I’m here solely to help Aston Martin become world champions, whether that’s with me behind the wheel or not.” However, if Aston Martin starts the 2026 season with a less competitive car, it will be ‘very difficult for Alonso to give up Formula 1 without trying one more time’. If the Spaniard can compete for victories again next year, according to Alonso himself, it would be ‘a very good way to end my career’.
