Fernando Alonso has shared his perspective on the title battle between the two McLaren drivers and Max Verstappen, as the season heads towards its climax. During the race weekend in Austin, the two-time world champion emphasized that not only the drivers, but especially the cars, will determine who will eventually take home the world title.
“The situation changes every day,” Alonso said about the title fight after the race weekend in Texas. “There’s a sense that a championship is underway, but that could change completely by tomorrow. Perhaps Lando wins with a thirty-second lead, Oscar Piastri suddenly comes in second, and Max has no chance at all, simply because the car isn’t fast enough.”
Alonso acknowledges that Max Verstappen is performing impressively, but emphasizes that ultimately, the speed and reliability of the car will determine the outcome in the final races towards Abu Dhabi. “Max is driving fantastically, that’s for sure, but in the end, the car will determine who becomes champion from now until Abu Dhabi,” said Alonso.
Struggle to the End
With five more races and two sprint races to go, the title fight remains incredibly tense, and the championship lead can quickly change hands. Max Verstappen is currently 40 points behind World Championship leader Oscar Piastri, while Lando Norris is only 14 points behind the Australian. Alonso’s words underscore that in Formula 1, nothing is certain until the very last lap of the final race of the season.
