Fernando Alonso, the most experienced driver on the current grid, was asked about the future of Max Verstappen. Rumors have been circulating for days about a possible move to Mercedes for the Dutchman. Alonso offers his services as an advisor to Verstappen on this matter, but under one condition: ‘He would have to pay a lot of money for that,’ jokes the Spaniard.
Although several Formula 1 notables have already weighed in on the Verstappen-to-Mercedes rumors, the media also wanted to know what advice Fernando Alonso would give to the younger driver. With more than twenty years in Formula 1, the Spaniard has a wealth of experience. In addition, the current Aston Martin driver has also driven for several teams. However, Alonso does not just give Max Verstappen advice.
“No, I don’t really have advice for him, but I can become his advisor,” the Spanish driver replies with a wink when the rumors about the four-time world champion are brought up in Silverstone. “However, he would have to pay a lot of money for that. At the moment, therefore, I have no advice for him.” Whether Verstappen will actually take up Alonso’s expensive offer is the question. The Dutchman previously stated that he determines his own future.
‘Max can do what he wants’
Pierre Gasly was also asked about the future of his former Red Bull teammate. The Frenchman drove for the Austrian racing team for half a season in 2019. “Am I surprised by the rumors? No, not really,” says the current Alpine driver. “Max is probably the best driver on the grid. Every driver wants to have the best car, and he doesn’t have that at the moment. He will be looking at opportunities, because he is of course a four-time world champion, and he can do what he wants.”
