In the lead-up to the Spanish Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has committed himself as an ambassador to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. With the arrival of new racing locations – including the brand-new street circuit in Madrid – Barcelona is at risk of disappearing from the calendar after 2026. Alonso is championing this ‘special’ track, hoping to promote it globally and convince Formula 1 to continue racing here for as long as possible.

“It is an honor and a privilege – I am very excited to be an ambassador for Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya,” responded Fernando Alonso. “This track is so special to me and all Spanish fans, and has brought us so much joy. It is a circuit that is closely linked to my career, as it was the first where I ever tested a single-seater, back when I was still in karting. It is the circuit where I have absolutely driven the most laps in my entire life – from Formula 1 pre-season tests to races and other activities.”

“I think of the unforgettable 2003 Spanish GP, when I first finished on the podium here,” said a nostalgic Alonso. “What an incredible sensation that was. For the first time, I saw all the stands turn blue and I felt so much support from the entire country. That was truly a turning point for me, and I look back on it with great pleasure.” The Spaniard was driving for the blue-yellow Renault at the time. Between 2005 and 2006, he would win two world titles with the French racing team.

‘Must Remain on the Calendar’

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has recently undergone a significant transformation to compete with the most modern tracks in Europe. “This was necessary,” emphasized Fernando Alonso. “In this way, the circuit is preparing for the future.” The current contract with Formula 1 expires in 2026. Also debuting that year on the calendar is the Madring – the new street circuit in the Spanish capital. Negotiations are currently underway for a new collaboration with the Catalans.

“In my opinion, it is absolutely necessary for the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to remain on the calendar, both because of the facilities and the tradition,” Alonso explained. “There are various types of circuits on the calendar, including urban circuits in major cities and tracks in the Middle East, which have incredible facilities. But there are also historical circuits with a long tradition in Formula 1, where the history of this sport has been written. All options must be weighed, but I believe these circuits should be preserved.”

The relationship between Fernando Alonso and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya extends beyond just the international promotion of the circuit, as described in the press release. Promising young drivers will also benefit from the extensive experience and knowledge of the Formula 1 veteran, as well as the new facilities available to them. “The idea is to help future generations with my experience,” said Alonso. “That’s why high-quality facilities like those at the circuit are so important. I believe we can achieve great things together.”
