Fernando Alonso is not yet considering retirement. The Spaniard scored his first World Championship points of the season during his home race, but remains motivated for every race. Especially with the new 2026 regulations on the horizon. ‘Ultimately, the stopwatch will tell me when to stop,’ says the two-time world champion.
At last, it happened for Fernando Alonso during his home race in Spain: his first World Championship points of the season. The Spaniard had not finished higher than eleventh place prior to the Grand Prix in Barcelona this year, but managed to score his first two points in front of his home crowd. Alonso has a contract with Aston Martin until 2026, but due to the disappointing results this year, rumors about the Spaniard’s retirement are flaring up again.
Retirement?
In 2026, the new regulations in Formula 1 will come into effect, making the balance between the teams unclear for next year. However, Alonso does not base his decision to retire or not solely on the 2026 car. “It will be an important factor, certainly, but not the only one,” Alonso tells Sky Sports. “I have to see how next year starts and how motivated I am.”
The two-time world champion says he must be ‘one hundred percent’ certain before he truly leaves Formula 1. “You really have to feel that it’s your time, and I don’t feel that yet,” the driver continues. “I get in the car and I’m still so happy and motivated to be on the grid. Ultimately, the stopwatch will tell me when to stop. Or if I physically lack something that prevents me from driving.” For now, Alonso is fully focused on 2026, ‘where all hope also lies’ for the Aston Martin team.
