Who will be the world champion in 2025? This is the big question as Formula 1 is on the eve of the nineteenth race of the season. Fernando Alonso observes the two McLaren drivers pulling away from the rest of the field, but believes that Max Verstappen should not be ruled out yet. ‘If they arrive in Abu Dhabi with a similar number of points, Max is your driver,’ says Alonso.

Max Verstappen has made up a whopping 41 World Championship points on championship leader Oscar Piastri since the summer break. The Dutchman is increasingly getting involved in the title fight, although the gap with the McLaren drivers – with six more Grands Prix to go this season – is still large.

Fernando Alonso also observes the battle at the front, but is not yet willing to predict who will be crowned world champion this year. “The two McLaren drivers obviously have an advantage now, so it’s probably between them. However, Max is a great driver, so if anyone can overcome the shortcomings of his car, it’s him.”

‘Then Max is your driver’

The Spaniard then continues his praise of the Dutch world champion. “He is a four-time world champion, and one of the best drivers in the history of the sport. In my opinion, he can always get the maximum out of every car. When the car is dominant, he takes world titles and breaks a few records along the way. When the car is not, he can still put in a good lap in qualifying and in the race. This year he is fighting against a better car, the McLaren, but if they arrive in Abu Dhabi with an equal number of points, then Max is your driver.”
