Fernando Alonso is advocating for reserve driver Felipe Drugovich to secure a seat in Formula 1 by 2026. The young Brazilian has been waiting for an opportunity within the Aston Martin ranks since his Formula 2 title win in 2022. Despite getting a taste of the premier class during several free practice sessions, a real race opportunity has so far eluded him. According to Alonso, however, Drugovich is an ‘incredible talent’ who deserves a place in Formula 1.
This year, Drugovich came remarkably close to making his debut when regular driver Lance Stroll threatened to miss the Canadian GP following hand surgery. The Brazilian stated at the time that he was even willing to forego his participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for a chance to fill in. However, the home driver recovered in time, resulting in Aston Martin appearing at the start with their familiar line-up. According to Alonso, it’s clear that Drugovich is now ready for an official debut.
‘He Always Delivers’
“It would be great to see him in Formula 1,” Alonso told Motorsport Week. “He is an incredible talent – his title season in Formula 2 was proof of that. Moreover, we see it here every day when we work with him.” The two-time world champion praised Drugovich’s commitment and involvement, both during free practice sessions and in the simulator in Silverstone: “He always delivers, even with very limited mileage.””It would be interesting to see Drugovich driving full-time,” Alonso concluded. “I hope that happens.” Although most teams have already finalized their line-up for 2026, the new Cadillac team has not yet contracted any drivers. Drugovich has often been linked with the Americans, partly because he has already driven with Cadillac in Le Mans. The team is also reportedly looking for young talent to be paired with an experienced driver.
