This weekend, Alex Albon crossed the finish line ninth at the Italian Grand Prix. It’s yet another instance this year where the British-Thai driver has managed to place his Williams in the top ten – he’s now responsible for all six World Championship points of the British racing team. Albon, who has committed to Williams for the coming years, hopes to climb further in the championship with the right upgrades.
“It was an intense race,” Alex Albon said about the GP in Monza. “Not because I had to race hard, I was in no man’s land the whole time, but because I felt the pressure from the competition the entire time. Kevin (Magnussen) disappeared into the distance and Fernando (Alonso) was breathing down my neck on a new set of tires. It was very difficult.”
The Persistent Racer Wins
“It was one of those races where the persistent racer wins, and I knew I just had to stay consistent and save my tires,” continued the 28-year-old driver. “When Alonso was getting closer, I felt a bit hunted, but we held on.” Albon managed to protect his tenth starting position throughout the race. Thanks to a penalty for Magnussen, he moved up to P9 at the last minute and scored two points for Williams.
Overcoming Alpine
“We need to make the most of these moments, because they don’t come around often,” he concluded. “We clearly missed out on points in Zandvoort – it’s a shame because that’s where we should have scored. In this way, we’re losing to our closest rival, Alpine. We’re in a kind of slow build-up, and we’re just starting to get back into it. We’ve finally introduced an upgrade, let’s hope it doesn’t stop there. The goal is to overtake Alpine and secure the eighth place in the championship.” The French team currently has thirteen World Championship points.
