The Formula 1 drivers are enjoying a well-deserved summer break over the next few weeks. After fourteen grueling Grands Prix, the season is temporarily on hold. At the end of August, the entire circus will head towards Zandvoort for the Dutch GP. Williams driver Alex Albon is looking forward to the Dutch racing extravaganza, although he believes that Zandvoort is not really designed for Formula 1 cars: “Zandvoort is like racing in a supermarket.”
In a conversation with Viaplay, the 29-year-old driver already looked ahead to the seaside weekend. “Yes, I love Zandvoort,” Albon responded enthusiastically. “It’s such a circuit where you shouldn’t really be driving a Formula 1 car. But it’s great that it’s possible.” He then made a striking comparison: “It feels a bit like you’re driving through a supermarket – there’s just no room,” he joked.
“That being said, you can drive through it very quickly,” he added. “It’s narrow, but that’s what makes it a fantastic circuit for real drivers. Besides, the weather is always interesting. The wind is perhaps better for windsurfing than for racing, but it also makes it challenging. Moreover, for some reason, Williams always thrives at Zandvoort,” Albon concluded with a laugh. “On paper, that’s completely illogical, but we’re dealing with it.”
The British-Thai driver has competed in three editions of the Dutch GP. His best result came in 2023, when he qualified fourth and crossed the finish line eighth in the race. Last year, he finished fourteenth.
