The news is out: Adrian Newey is making the much-anticipated move to Aston Martin. The team announced this during a special press conference on Tuesday. The 65-year-old Brit had already indicated in May that he would be leaving Red Bull, ending a nineteen-year collaboration. After months of speculation about his future, Newey has now found a new employer in Lawrence Stroll’s Aston Martin team.

The praises from Aston Martin have paid off: Adrian Newey is heading to Silverstone. The Englishman will primarily take on the role of a shareholder and managing technical partner. The BBC previously reported that the aerodynamics guru has signed a five-year contract. According to the broadcaster, Lawrence Stroll is willing to dig deep into his pockets for Newey’s expertise. The designer is said to earn more at Aston Martin than many Formula 1 drivers; reportedly, his contract, excluding bonuses, is worth over 35 million euros per year.

Ferrari’s Missed Opportunity with Adrian Newey

For a long time, it seemed that Adrian Newey was set to join Ferrari. A union between the celebrated engineer and the Scuderia seemed inevitable, especially after Lewis Hamilton made the switch to Maranello. However, a deal between the two parties did not materialize. Moving to Italy turned out to be a deal-breaker for Newey, while Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur cited a disagreement.

It’s no surprise that Adrian Newey is such a sought-after figure within Formula 1. The creations of the acclaimed designer have yielded no less than twenty-five world titles. His cars have won the constructors’ championship twelve times, while thirteen drivers have claimed the title in a Newey-designed vehicle. Three-time world champion Max Verstappen has also benefited from the skills of the British engineer in recent years.
