Max Verstappen could race this year in the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. The Dutchman already made his debut on the Nordschleife last year in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS), which immediately yielded his first win. The NLS has since adjusted its calendar so the four-time F1 world champion can prepare optimally for the 24-hour event. Andreas Gülden, the instructor who guided him during his debut last year, is keen that Verstappen signs up.

In the run-up to his first NLS race in September Verstappen had to complete a number of training programmes. He was assisted by Gülden, a Nordschleife veteran and expert. Thanks to the German, Verstappen obtained his DMSB licence, the ‘driver’s licence’ that permits him to compete on the infamous circuit.

The four-time world champion is now flirting with a start in the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. During Red Bull’s so‑called season launch in Detroit he made clear he will only take part under strict conditions; thorough preparation is essential for him. The NLS organisers immediately accommodated him and moved the second NLS race of the year to a weekend without Formula 1. Initially that race overlapped with the Japanese Grand Prix.

Max Mania

The German-language outlet Mennem asked Andreas Gülden about a possible entry by Verstappen in the 24-hour race. “They should do everything to get him to the Nürburgring,” he replied enthusiastically. “That’s the best thing for the series and the best thing that could happen to the race.” The NLS already enjoyed a visible boost from Verstappen’s impact last year. livestreams of the race broke records and a genuine ‘Max Mania’ erupted around the circuit.

“It’s good for us, good for the Nürburgring and above all good for all Nordschleife fans,” Gülden continued. The adjustments to the NLS calendar naturally have other consequences: participants and visitors must rebook hotels and change travel plans. Gülden expressed understanding, but was clear at the same time: “I’m sorry for everyone who now has to postpone. But if you think about it honestly, everyone can understand it.”
