Audi boss Mattia Binotto reflected on the team’s first official test days. The German factory outfit, following the takeover of Sauber, is regarded as a brand-new stable in Formula 1. During the initial shakedown in Barcelona the so-called R26 car was hit by the usual teething problems. Binotto stressed that the team’s primary focus during these test sessions was reliability.

“This was Audi’s very first official test in Formula 1,” Binotto said after the five-day test. “For us this is the beginning as a team, but also as an engine manufacturer.” He pointed out that the opening phase did not run smoothly. “I’d say there is a lot to learn — and we are learning a lot. If you look at the very first day, there were many issues that delayed our test programme, and the same applied to the second day.” Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hülkenberg were forced to stop the car on track several times.

‘The more we run, the more we learn’

At the same time Binotto saw progress as the test week progressed. “In the end we managed to complete a number of solid laps. There were still some issues, but we covered a fair number of kilometres, which means the team gathered valuable data.” With an eye on the pre-season test in Bahrain, the Audi boss emphasised further development and improving reliability. “We are all very excited,” he assured. “But at the same time we know there is still a lot to improve.”

“The more we run, the more we learn,” Binotto continued optimistically. “I think we are now genuinely in that phase. In that respect these test days were hugely important.” The Italian closed with a clear message about the team’s priorities. “Reliability is always crucial. Yes, we had a few small problems, but it was not dramatic. There are certainly plenty of positives as well.”
