He came close, but a podium in Miami proved just out of reach for Nyck de Vries in Formula E. The Frisian produced his best weekend of the season with fourth in qualifying and fifth in the race. Mitch Evans claimed his fifteenth Formula E victory in Miami, a record in the electric series.

The Florida city set the stage for the third race weekend of the year. De Vries had struggled in the Mahindra during the opening rounds, scoring just two points. The 2021 champion showed clear progress in Miami, running up front in treacherous conditions.

It wasn’t straightforward on a wet surface. Nico Müller took pole for the first time in his Formula E career, with Felipe Drugovich beside him. After several strategic scraps, Antonio Félix da Costa was leading at the halfway mark. Müller soon grabbed the lead back, and an incident then unfolded between Drugovich and da Costa.

De Vries had his eye on P3 but came under heavy pressure from the chasing pack fighting for the final step on the podium. While Evans swept to the lead in the closing stages with a neat pass, De Vries eventually yielded positions to Pascal Wehrlein and Joel Eriksson. That pair finished behind Evans and Müller as third and fourth respectively; De Vries was fifth.

In the championship, Nick Cassidy — who finished outside the points here — still leads after three races. De Vries sits twelfth. The next Formula E weekend is in two weeks’ time in Saudi Arabia, with two races scheduled in Jeddah.
