Lando Norris and Max Verstappen are digging deep into their pockets for the upcoming Formula 1 season. Reports reveal both drivers owe the FIA over one million euros just to participate in the elite racing class. This hefty fee covers the renewal of their super licenses, the essential permits needed to hit the track in Melbourne. The cost is determined by their performance in the previous season.

In the thrilling 2025 season, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, alongside Oscar Piastri, battled fiercely for the championship title. In the end, it was the Brit who emerged victorious, clinching his first world title in Formula 1 with a mere two points lead over the Dutchman. As they gear up for 2026, both drivers are once again among the favorites as the new season kicks off in March.

Expensive Super Licenses

Before the action begins, all drivers must renew their FIA super licenses, and as with nearly everything in Formula 1, it comes with a steep price tag. Each driver will pay a base fee of €11,842 in 2026. On top of that, an additional €2,392 is charged for every championship point scored in 2025. For top drivers, these costs can skyrocket. With both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen racking up over 400 points, they face bills exceeding one million euros to compete in 2026. Oscar Piastri narrowly avoids this threshold with 410 points.

Fortunately for the drivers, they won’t be footing the bill themselves. In all cases, the team covers the super license costs. This means some teams come out significantly cheaper. Cadillac, making its F1 debut in 2026, only needs to pay the base fee for the super licenses of Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas. Similarly, Alpine keeps costs low, as Franco Colapinto scored no championship points last year, making his license a mere €11,842.
