Step Behind the Scenes of Formula 1: Our Reporters Were at Every Grand Prix in 2025, Including Abu Dhabi. Not Just Online, But Also in Our Magazine, We Share What We Experience. Part 24 of 24 (Finale): André Venema on Rockers.

At the Las Vegas Grand Prix, you trip over stars every year: the list is endless! A-listers galore, just like in the days when Bernie Ecclestone held the reins.

For years, the star power at GP events was pretty low. Even Ecclestone complained to teams, “Why don’t you invite more celebrities?” Because, as Mr. E knew, stars are great for the show. Just look at the ratings for entertainment shows and the circulation of gossip magazines worldwide!

In Abu Dhabi, I spotted quite a few familiar faces at F1’s annual year-end party, beyond the usual suspects. This was especially true on Saturday night after qualifying. I was hunting for reactions when I bumped into an old acquaintance outside Red Bull’s hospitality area: Stefan Johansson, now a celebrated artist.

We chatted about everything under the sun, particularly his move from California to Dubai, when two rockers joined us. “How’s it going, guys? Great to see you again,” said one with long blonde hair and plenty of ink on his body. “Heading to the Metallica concert later?” It turned into a lively discussion about music and Max Verstappen’s qualifying show. After ten minutes, the friendly rockers moved on.

“Who are they?” I asked Johansson. “Friends of yours? They looked artistic.” The former Ferrari driver replied, “That blonde guy always stops by for a chat when I see him at a race. But who he is? I keep forgetting his name. Do you know?” Nope. Thankfully, Google saves the day for questions like this: it was British pop star Sam Ryder. An incredibly nice guy. I’m already a fan!
