Will Formula 1 be racing in Madrid next year or not? The Spanish capital is busy preparing for the first Spanish Grand Prix on the Madring street circuit, but construction is reportedly so delayed that Formula 1 is already looking at alternatives. Nonsense, says the mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida. ‘The construction of the circuit is ahead of schedule,’ the Spaniard even claims.
Formula 1 is set to travel to Madrid for the first time in 2026. On September 11, 12, and 13, the drivers will take to the streets of the Spanish capital, at least that’s the plan. This week, however, it was revealed that the construction of the brand-new Madring circuit is delayed, as local authorities have already encountered various problems. The venue for the revamped Spanish Grand Prix is being built near Barajas airport.
The organizers behind the new Spanish Grand Prix label these rumors about a potential cancellation of the race as ‘absurd’ and call it ‘fake news’. “On September 12, 2026, there will be a Formula 1 race in Madrid,” says the mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, according to German Motorsport Total. “I don’t know where this news comes from, but the construction of the circuit is ahead of schedule and progressing smoothly.”
‘It will be a great success’
Martinez-Almeida then immediately makes a promise. “Madrid will, despite some reservations and annoyance among some, organize a Grand Prix that will be one of the best,” the Spaniard is certain. “The sponsors are on board and the construction of the circuit is progressing. So I’m sorry, but on September 12 next year, Formula 1 will be racing in Madrid, and it will be a great success.”
