Sergio Pérez is on the verge of making his return to Formula 1. The Mexican driver, who has extensive experience in the premier class and was Max Verstappen‘s teammate for four seasons, is set to become a future Cadillac driver. Based on his experience, he dares to make the following prediction about his former colleague: ‘I think he will become the best driver in the history of the sport.’
Sergio Pérez is set to make his comeback to Formula 1 in 2026 as a driver for the American team Cadillac. This marks an end to his forced departure from Formula 1 after just one year. Pérez was let go by Red Bull at the end of 2024 after a disappointing season. Before being dismissed by the Austrians, he was Max Verstappen’s longest-serving teammate.
“Looking back, what happened at Red Bull was the best thing that could have happened to me,” Pérez reflects on his departure from the team in an interview with the Italian branch of Motorsport.com. “Because at Red Bull, and in the circumstances I found myself in, a lot was expected of me.”
Best Driver Ever
“And all the drivers who have come and will come will continue to face the same challenges. The Red Bull car is a very complex vehicle to drive, in which you constantly have to adapt to Verstappen’s style,” the Mexican explains why his time with the Austrians was so challenging. Pérez was Verstappen’s teammate for four seasons, and based on this experience, he dares to make a prediction: “I think he will become the best driver in the history of the sport. The Red Bull project is tailor-made for him.”
