McLaren faces the risk of a double disqualification for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The FIA is investigating both Lando Norris‘s and Oscar Piastri‘s cars for a potential violation of the technical regulations. The issue revolves around the wooden plank beneath the chassis, known as the skid block. In both McLarens, this appears to be worn down by more than 9 millimeters, less than the minimum thickness prescribed by the rules.
FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer has forwarded the issue to the stewards, who are now assessing whether McLaren has indeed violated the rules. The situation is notable, as previous similar violations offer little hope for the Woking-based team. Lewis Hamilton was disqualified earlier this year for the same offense at the China Grand Prix. Recent history thus suggests that McLaren may face a similar fate.
Should the FIA proceed with disqualification, it would have significant implications for the championship battle. World Championship leader Lando Norris finished second in Las Vegas, behind rival Max Verstappen. McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri crossed the finish line in fourth place. In the event of a double disqualification, both Piastri and Verstappen would be only 24 points behind the Brit at the start of the last two races. This would completely intensify the fight for the championship.
