Jenson Button warns Red Bull that the issue of finding a suitable second driver alongside Max Verstappen is becoming increasingly apparent and could potentially impact the team. The British driver suggests that the racing team will never win another constructors’ championship if they cannot find a teammate who can be competitive alongside Verstappen.
Button identifies a significant issue at Red Bull concerning the performance of their second driver. The former world champion points out that the gap with Max Verstappen is much larger than often perceived. “Most drivers who have so far occupied the second seat at Red Bull are far behind in terms of performance,” Button told Sky Sports. “A difference of three-tenths is already significant in Formula 1 terms, but you can understand that because Max is so strong and almost in a class of his own. But the difference is much larger than that. Sometimes it’s two or even three times as large.”
According to Button, Red Bull has a structural problem if they want to continue winning the constructors’ championship in the coming years. “That’s exactly the problem they have,” the Brit explains. “They will never win another constructors’ championship if their second driver is so far behind Max. So they must continue to search for the right second driver.”
