During the race weekend in Brazil, Lewis Hamilton spoke out against the ‘old guard’ within Formula 1. Over the past two years, numerous rookies have made their debut on the grid; the seven-time world champion notes that many former drivers and other Formula 1 insiders are unnecessarily negative about this new generation. Hamilton emphasizes how impressive it is that this generation has claimed their place on the grid.

Kimi Antonelli, Oliver Bearman, Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto, Isack Hadjar, and Franco Colapinto have all moved up to Formula 1 in the past two years. According to Hamilton, they have each proven that they can handle the level and belong in the sport. The 40-year-old Brit also recognizes the challenges young drivers face. In São Paulo, he stressed the importance of supporting them.

‘Want to continue supporting the youth’

“It’s great to see young talent breaking through,” Hamilton told the press in Brazil. “I remember well when I made my debut here in 2007 and was also a rookie.” According to the former champion, the pressure on newcomers is often underestimated. “They may quickly master the driving, but then there are all those other responsibilities. The pressure is enormous. These young guys are bombarded with questions, nowadays also via social media. But I think they all handle it very well.”

Hamilton feels that he – as a Formula 1 veteran – should play a positive role in the development of young talent. “Even when I retire, I want to continue supporting the youth,” he promised. “You hear so many negative things from the old guard these days; drivers who often have achieved little themselves. That’s why I think it’s great to see how relaxed these young guys remain. They visibly enjoy what they do and succeed in it. So yes, I am very curious about the progress of their various careers.”
