Jonathan Wheatley is overjoyed at Sauber, now part of Audi, particularly due to his collaboration with Mattia Binotto. The Englishman shares this in an interview. “There has to be a certain allure. The opportunity to work with Mattia was a special one. We’ve known each other since 2006.”
About a year ago, Wheatley reportedly first spoke with Audi about a potential move. CEO Gernot Döllner discussed the plans and the role they had in mind for him. Wheatley says, “There’s a good structure with Mattia being ultimately responsible for the chassis and powertrain. And I would be in charge of everything related to racing. From that moment on, I was excited.”
The team turned out to be younger than he had expected, but the motivation of all the employees impressed Wheatley. “Everyone is open to new ideas and challenges. We are all part of the same journey.” A journey from Sauber to Audi. “It’s a wonderful prospect to wear the famous four rings on your clothing from next season.”
