George Russell is still not over the opening round of the Mexico Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver reiterated his criticism of Max Verstappen in Brazil, who went off the track at the start. According to Russell, this should not have gone unpunished.
“I was really surprised to see that the drivers got away without a penalty,” Russell said on Thursday in São Paulo. “If you look at Monza: if you miss the chicane there, you have to go past the foam blocks and you lose time. In Mexico, that’s not the case. Personally, I don’t like that first turn at all.”
The Briton believes that the circuit design makes a fair fight impossible. “There’s only one ideal line, which means you can’t really engage in a real fight in turn one or carry that duel through to turn four,” Russell explains. “On a circuit like Bahrain, you can: there you can counterattack and fight together up to turn four, without track limits being a problem. Moreover, there’s a hairpin turn there, which makes it almost impossible not to cut the corner.”
Therefore, Russell believes that the FIA and the organization in Mexico need to take action. “We briefly discussed it before the weekend, but I think that turn needs to be completely redesigned,” said the Mercedes driver.
