Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff remains confident in the battle for second place in the Constructors’ Championship, despite a series of disappointing weekends for the team. The Silberpfeile lost that second spot in Mexico to rival Ferrari – the difference between both teams is only one World Championship point. Red Bull follows in fourth place, trailing Ferrari by ten points.

“With four races to go,” Toto Wolff wrote in his preview of the São Paulo Grand Prix. “Only one point now separates us from Ferrari, with Red Bull just nine points behind us. We’ve had a few tough weekends, but we’re still very much in the fight for P2.” After Mercedes’ lead driver George Russell crossed the finish line first in Singapore, he finished sixth twice in the United States and Mexico. “Each of the upcoming four Grands Prix will be crucial in the battle for second place in the Constructors’,” Wolff assured. “Although our lead in Austin and Mexico has disappeared, we can strike back in Brazil.”

Sprint Weekend in São Paulo

The Austrian is eagerly looking forward to the upcoming race weekend in São Paulo, where the penultimate sprint weekend of the season is scheduled. Wolff knows that Mercedes will have to be sharp from the get-go at Interlagos. “The sprint weekend means we have to be at our best from the start,” he explained. “Interlagos is an old-school circuit with a bumpy surface, elevation changes, and a wide range of corners. Add in the unpredictable weather, and there’s little room for error.” Interlagos

Despite recent setbacks, Wolff clearly wants to take the lead in the fight for second place. “Whatever the weekend brings us, our goal is to perform well right away, be better than our competitors, and catch up with our closest rivals again,” he concluded defiantly. After Brazil, there are three more races in which Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull will battle it out to see who finishes the season as ‘best of the rest’ behind McLaren.
