Are you an Ayrton Senna fan? Do you have a spare spot in your garage? Good news: Senna’s McLaren MP4/6 is soon going under the hammer. This is the car with which the Brazilian legend secured his third and final world title in 1991. With this specific chassis, he also achieved his first home victory at Interlagos. If you’re interested in the MP4/6, you’ll obviously need deep pockets. The value of this racing car is estimated at over 10 million euros.
The McLaren MP4/6 is powered by a Honda V12 engine, capable of nearly 800 horsepower. In 1991, Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger took the wheel of this racing beast and delivered McLaren both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles. For the acclaimed Brazilian, it marked his third and final world championship in Formula 1. He drove two more seasons for McLaren in 1992 and 1993, before making the switch to Williams in 1994.
Ayrton Senna’s Championship-Winning Chassis to be Auctioned
In December, the chassis with which Senna won the Brazilian Grand Prix will go under the hammer. The race car was in McLaren’s possession for thirty years, after which the team’s heritage division restored the car and sold it to its current – and only – private owner. The renowned RM Sotheby’s will handle the auction. Nick Wiles, a car specialist from the Canadian auction house, emphasizes the importance of this unique car. “Few figures in motorsport have captivated the world as much as Ayrton Senna,” he responded in an official press release.
‘The Pinnacle for Any Collector’
“Anything associated with him – a helmet, a racing suit, even something he once touched – is sacred to collectors,” he added. “Senna transcended the role of a driver long before his tragic death; he became an icon. But even within that realm, there are levels, and this car is at the very top. The McLaren MP4/6 with which he won his home race in Brazil – in what he himself called the ‘hardest fought race of his life’ – represents the pinnacle for any Formula 1 collector. It’s hard to imagine anything more meaningful or desirable.”
The auction of the MP4/6 begins on December 8 and closes on December 11. The estimated value is between 10 and 13 million euros. In the meantime, the car will also be on display at upcoming RM Sotheby’s auctions in London and Abu Dhabi.
