Lando Norris convincingly won the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday. With a lead of over thirty seconds, the Briton was in a class of his own at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Behind him, an entertaining race spectacle unfolded, with his competitors battling for the remaining points until the final lap. The championship has a new leader, but the title fight is more exciting than ever. Here’s what the international press had to say about the Mexico City GP!
“Bild headlines, “Norris dominates and takes the lead in the world championship.” The German outlet praises the Briton for reclaiming the top spot. “He dominated the GP in Mexico at will,” our eastern neighbors say. “After surviving the opening phase unscathed, the McLaren driver disappeared on the horizon and only had to complete the race flawlessly. His reward was not only the victory, but also the lead in the world championship – albeit narrowly. He is now only one point ahead of Oscar Piastri.”
‘Demonic pace’
La Gazzetta dello Sport was naturally pleased with Ferrari’s form during the Mexican main event. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton surprisingly qualified second and third for the Grand Prix. Leclerc managed to maintain his position, allowing Scuderia to reclaim second place in the constructors’ championship. The Italian sports newspaper saw how Charles Leclerc had a heated battle with Max Verstappen in the final phase – a thrilling duel. “You can’t expect more from the Monegasque,” the report reads. “He excellently parried Verstappen’s comeback with an SF-25 that finally seemed a bit competitive again.”
The Italians further speak of the ‘demonic pace’ of race winner Lando Norris: “He has sent a clear signal to his title rivals. Piastri managed to limit the damage somewhat – he finished fifth. Given the expectations, that’s a positive result, but he had to relinquish the lead in the world championship. With four Grands Prix to go, the title fight is wide open.”
‘Turning Point in the Title Fight’
In France, they are eagerly looking forward to the conclusion of the title fight, which may only be decided during the season finale in Abu Dhabi. “It is not yet clear when the championship will be decided this season, but given the current three-way battle, the last Grand Prix seems to be the deciding factor,” says L’Équipe. “And when we look back on this season later, it is quite possible that the GP of Mexico will be considered one of the most important turning points.” Despite Norris’ ‘masterful’ victory, the French medium is particularly pleased with Verstappen’s ‘rise’. “At the end of the race, he could even threaten Leclerc, who had spent most of the race in no man’s land.”
Host country Mexico was finally very satisfied with this tenth edition of the GP of Mexico City. “The celebration of the tenth anniversary of this Grand Prix could not but be accompanied by a historic performance and a result that could determine the world championship for drivers,” wrote the Mexican El Universal. “The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit turned papaya and burst at the seams with the victory of Lando Norris – his first on Mexican soil and his sixth of the season. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen completed the podium. The Brit outperformed teammate Oscar Piastri, who missed the podium for the sixth time in a row.”
